Blast from the Past

August 5th, 2008

Longtime readers of this blog will know of my admiration of Friendster, a company that many have pronounced dead despite being the 9th largest web-site in the world (reason: Americans don’t go to it, so why should anyone care).

The company is announcing another $20m in funding and a new CEO: Richard Kimber.

Richard is an Australian and a keen collector of Porches. It’s also a blast from the past in that the first company I founded, the BookmarkBox, an online bookmark service that turned into a community search provider before we sold it in January of 2000, had three investors. Given that my fellow co-founder Mike and I were 18, the only investor we had that didn’t share a last name with us, was Richard’s dad Mike Kimber.

Richard was then running the online brokerage of HSBC Australia. Great to see he has gone on to greater things and look forward to seeing how Friendster progresses from here.
