Calcanis Actually Has Interesting Chat About SEO

You have to love how Calacanis plays a series of SEO webmasters like a fiddle and then seeing them return the favor. Calacanis actually gets valuable feedback in trying to help build Mahalo in the process. Interesting to see how the message has changed subtly from ridding Google results of spam to an increasing focus on being a better Squidoo.

About 40 mins in, there is a great call and discussion on ’scraping’ versus editors inputting headlines, i.e. manual Mahalo scraping.

Laughable quote: “If we get any [organic referral] traffic from Google, then great. It’s not in the plan.” Ahhhhhhh yeah right :) About.com and Squidoo and Wikipedia and DMoz and any other parallel get nearly all their traffic from Google organic search referrals.

In the end, Jason and his guests are trending towards each other. The exact same people, creating the exact same type of ad-supported longtail resource content pages.

Maybe there will be a Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker father moment at some point down the road.
